Camera Controls
Overview
There’s one camera, and it’s yours from the moment you load into the world. It looks down on your colony from above, and three moves cover everything: pan to move around, zoom to get closer or further back, and orbit to look at a scene from a different angle.
How it works
- Pan — hold W A S D to move the camera across the ground, or push your mouse cursor to the edge of the screen. Diagonals blend (W+A pans up-left). The camera eases smoothly to a stop.
- Zoom — the scroll wheel moves the camera closer to or further from the ground.
- Orbit — hold right mouse button and drag to rotate the view around whatever point is currently on screen. A quick right-click (no drag) is a different thing — that’s an order, see Selecting & Giving Orders.
- Follow — the camera can lock onto a moving colonist or a point of interest and track it automatically; panning with WASD or dragging to orbit breaks the lock and hands control back to you.
Playing with it
- Zoomed out, you get the big picture — good for spotting a raid coming or planning where to expand. Zoomed in, you can watch a fight or a crafting job up close.
- Orbiting is the fastest way to see behind a hill or into a courtyard without having to pan all the way around it.
- The camera won’t fly off the edge of the map — panning stops once you reach the world’s boundary.
Good to know
- If the camera ever stops responding to WASD, check that your mouse cursor is actually inside the game window — edge-panning and some input handling only engage while the window has focus.
- Right-drag to orbit works in every mode, including while placing a building.
